Last year my husband did quite a bit of fishing, more than he has for a few years, and while out in his canoe and kayak, he decided that he had a use for a cushion to support his knees for when he was kneeling in the boat.
Although I am trying to use up what I might have in my stash, the fabric I needed was not to be found, nor did I have the foam cushion. So, off we went into town to see what we could find. First we found a piece of remnant foam cushion that was perfect.
My ambition was overcome by the many things I had going on last year which needed to be completed and before I knew it the cushion sat in the corner of my sewing room. Well, while on a three-week summer break from college courses, I was determined to get through all my unfinished projects, this being one of them.

First I measured out what I needed and fitted it to the foam cushion, cutting off the excess. From the 1 yard piece of fabric I was able to cover it nicely with half the piece remaining.
As I pinned the fabric in place on the cushion, I was trying to decide whether it needed a handle or not. My husband said it would be fine, but I know that when he starts packing things up, it would be really nice if there were a handle so that he could throw it over his shoulder while he carried his tackle box. My life is always much easier when I think ahead before a project becomes a prototype, where I have to rework what I have done.
So into my drawer of miscellaneous webbed strapping where I found a belt my daughters had used years ago when they were little. I cut off the ends and added it to the cushion. Once this decision was made, I propped my feet up and began hand stitching the covering on.
Due to my choice of not adding a zipper, and knowing how difficult it is to pull fabric over these cushions along with my desire to have a nice tight closure, I decided to enjoy some hand stitching. There is something therapeutic about hand stitching. In addition, usually my hand stitching is quite even and tight, so I was not too concerned.
