The advantage of being married to a man who enjoys woodworking and carpentry, is that you get to enjoy his ability make useful items for the house and family, along with those moments when I can request specific organizational items for my sewing room. We are both perfectionists in what we do and what we need to have done, so it can be an interesting conversation when we share our specifications with the crafter, either the carpenter or the seamstress.
For me, I had a small place between one of my sewing dressers, that I stand and work at, and the 12″ square storage unit. Since I tend to use plastic storage units found in the fishing section (MUCH less expensive than in the crafting section/stores) for notions such as appliques, beads, ribbon, etc. (I’ll share later the gorgeous unit he made me for my button storage). I was stacking them between the two above mentioned units. It was a bit tacky but also inpractical since many times the box I wanted would either be in the middle or at the bottom. I needed to remedy this.
Well, as previously mentioned, my husband and I are both perfectionists. The key element to this project was that I could only remove three boxes at a time comfortably resulting in my need to have shelves that would hold this quantity. Since wood is expensive and that the structure would hold quite nicely with less wasted space, my husband was thinking five boxes per shelf space. We are both frugal and money wise, and I have also spent a few years in furniture manufacturing, so I understood completely where he was coming from.
You had to have been a fly on the wall to understand and appreciated the frustration that later turned to laughter as we both tried to explain our viewpoints. Since I would be the end user, I finally decided to bring him into my sewing room to show him the difference in how many boxes I could comfortably pull out at one time versus what his manly hands could do. We knew what we were saying, understood the other with the difficulty of convincing the other why our view point was correct. Yet, in the end, the user scored the most beautiful storage unit, custom made to keep her notions neat and tidy. And the timely was perfect, as he completed this gorgeous unit today during my birthday week.
Enjoy the pictures while I enjoy the utilization of the love and skill he provided for my sewing pleasure.
