I’ve never had a feather pillow before, and the only person I knew that really enjoyed them was my son-in-law. Yet, prior to the holidays last year, my friend was going to throw hers out, then decided that it was possible that I could make a new pillow out of it. The outer fabric had seen better days, yet the feather pillow insert was in good condition. So, I accepted this gift of friendship and placed it in my sewing room until I had a chance to re-make it with a new cover.
Life has been quite busy since the beginning of the year, yet a few weeks back I was cleaning out the sewing room and came across the pillow, reminding myself of this project. I still had not decided what fabric I would use to cover it, I knew that when I came across the inspirational selection, I would be motivated to make what I knew would be beautiful.
Yesterday, to my delight, I was gifted with a small bag of fabric. There were a few small pieces of cottons, a wool tweed, some asian silk, along with this “perfect” sized piece of corduroy/upholstery fabric for the pillow!! SCORE!! Not only did I fall in love with the fabric, but it also matched the recliner as well as the wingback chair my husband and I had finished reupholstering yesterday.
I had previously gone through my own stash of fabric, not finding that perfect piece of inspiration. I felt quite blessed, as I worked and completed this beautiful addition to our home as a result of friends who generously gave of what they had no use for.
The only thing that I had not planned on, was having to work around the flying feathers. They can be a challenge, but I quickly worked through it, creating a pattern from the old pillow cover, then immediately tossing it to avoid more feather distribution. I then completed sewing the pillow sides together, making sure NOT to create dog ears, in order to have a nicely formed pillow.
The added bonus is that this new, 18″ square pillow is the perfect size for using behind my back in the recliner. Since recliners tend to have extra pillow cushion at the head of the chair, it tends to cause my head to lean forward too much, resulting in straining my neck and shoulders. This pillow is what we call the therapeutic pillow for our reclining backs.
Here are the results of what two friends had shared, followed by my enjoyment of sewing.
